The Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands opens this October in the islands First Court of Violence against Children in Spain, designed so that young victims of crime suffer as little trauma as possible; it even allows them to make their first and only statement in court accompanied by their pets.

In this way, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be this Friday the the first capital in Spain to have a specialized court on Violence against Children and Adolescents, the Court of Instruction number 3 of the capital judicial district to deal with alleged crimes in which the victims are children or adolescents of between 0 and 18 years .

This is one pioneering pilot experience in the State that will take place for a maximum period of 24 months. This court will deal exclusively with the following matters referring to childhood and adolescence, in accordance with what was approved by the General Council of the Judiciary, both for the crime of injuries, crimes against freedom, against moral integrity, and against freedom and indemnity. sexual.

A specific and experienced judge

The magistrate who faces the direction of the pilot project in front of the Court of Instruction number 3 of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is Tomás Luis Martín Rodríguez, a career magistrate since 1997, graduated in Law from the University of Salamanca in 1992. He has been the holder of the Court of Instruction number 3 of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria since July 2003, and has a extensive experience in the fight against abuse of children and adolescents.

The goal is to achieve the greatest operability, efficiency and effectiveness possible and with the aim of reaching maximum criteria from the demands of the justice adapted to girls, boys and adolescents, with the creation by the Institute of Legal Medicine of the first Comprehensive Unit for Forensic Assessment of Violence Against Children and Adolescents, which will include two forensic doctors and forensic psychology professionals.

It will also be created a joint work table and a specific action protocol will be developed in the health field.

A specific space

Procedures have been initiated for the authorization of a space in the referral hospital, Hospital Materno Infantil to implement a cfailure to receive complaints and taking statements, an office for the forensic doctor, reviewing the Joint Action Protocol and achieving greater specialization in forensic pediatrics and a new documentation and registration team in the hospital environment.

There will be a new telematic Gesell room and a multipurpose room for the exclusive use of this court, with the adaptation of spaces and installation of screens, an office for the Comprehensive Forensic Assessment Unit of Violence Against Children and Adolescents, Room for the Exploration of underage victims.

A waiting room for relatives, a recreation area, a multipurpose room for taking statements and a control and observation room, facilities infrastructures for the new facilities and video recording equipment and video analysis software, among other tools and spaces.

The initiative, promoted by the Board of Investigating Judges of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and endorsed by the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands, is implemented in development of the draft Organic Law for the Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents against violence, for the specialization of the criminal and civil jurisdiction, as in its day it was done with the implementation of the Violence against Women courts.
