London / Friedrichshafen – Rolls-Royce plans to produce emergency power generators with fuel cell technology in series soon. The company announced on Monday. According to this, the modules for the power supply of data centers should come onto the market in 2025. The fuel cell modules for this come from Cellcentric, a joint venture between Daimler Truck AG and Volvo Group AB.

The fuel cell technology is climate neutral, provided the hydrogen used is obtained with the help of renewable energies. Rolls Royce’s Power Systems division, based in Friedrichshafen, claims to be one of the world’s three largest suppliers of emergency power generators for data centers. The goal is “that in the future more than half of the data centers with fuel cell-based emergency power and thus run emission-free,” said Perry Kuiper of Power Systems according to the announcement.
