The Alicante Provincial Council has launched, in collaboration with the University of Alicante, interactive maps on the places of residence of citizens foreigners in the province. The tool will provide municipalities with highly useful information for municipal management, since data is collected on the density, percentage, origin and place of birth, as well as the age and sex of international residents, who currently represent the 20% of the total population of the province.

This was highlighted this morning by the deputy for International Residents, Juan de Dios Navarro, in the presentation of this new portal, in which he was accompanied by the rector of the UA, Amparo Navarro, and the professor of Sociology and the University Institute of Tourism Research of the UA, Rachel Huete, who has led the multidisciplinary team of demographers and geographers that have developed these maps, which are hosted on the web
www.ciudadanosextranjeros.es

«The creation of a portal with the mapping At the municipal level of the foreign populations registered in the province of Alicante, it will serve for decision-making at both the provincial and municipal levels and therefore we are going to make this powerful tool available to the 141 Alicante city councils so that they continue promoting the necessary services for all those people, more than 330.000, who have chosen our land to reside ”, stated Juan de Dios Navarro, who has detailed that the interactive maps highlight the dynamics of the settlements, mainly on the coast, of most foreigners.

In this sense, the deputy has pointed out that “it is a dynamic mapping in which the user can approach the municipality and observe the data corresponding to it in terms of its distribution and density.”

Most populated areas

From the information collected so far on the web, a pattern of settlement on the coast, concentrated mainly in the regions of La Marina Alta, Marina Baixa and Vega Baja, although in the latter a high concentration is also detected in the pre-littoral.

The rector of the UA stressed, for her part, that the data collected reflects that the province of Alicante «is, as we already intuited, especially prone to internationalization and one of the most welcoming to foreign residents of Spain ». «Knowing the migratory map, knowing where the different nationalities are concentrated in our province is important for decision-making, both in the field of tourism, social services, public income or expenditure or infrastructure », has added Amparo Navarro.

In this regard, and as explained by Raquel Huete, in addition to observing the population according to its density and proportion with respect to the total population, the new portal allows finding the percentage of the population by each of the nationalities present in the province and it is the user himself who chooses how he wants the information to appear: total data, blocks of nationalities or specific nationalities.

Different origins

Following these parameters, it can be observed that citizens of northern European countries are concentrated on the coast, while those from Africa do so in more industrial regions such as Vinalopó and l’Alcoià-Comtat and those of China in the big cities.

The interactive maps, which will be constantly updated, have also highlighted, following age criteria, that in large cities the population pyramid widens at the central values, while on the coast, traditionally occupied by British and Nordics , an aging of the population is appreciated.

The deputy for European Residents has finally advanced that in the next few days a letter will be sent to all the town councils of the province informing them of the launch of this new interactive service «which will be very useful for the design and application of the municipal policies, ”Navarro insisted.
