Berlin – The number of corona laboratory tests in Germany increased significantly last week, according to data from a large laboratory association. Around 1.5 million PCR tests were recorded, an increase of 39 percent compared to the week, as the Association of Accredited Laboratories in Medicine (ALM) announced on Tuesday in Berlin. The data are based on information from around 180 laboratories. In total, more than two million tests are possible per week. Regionally, however, capacity limits have already been reached. “The extremely rapid increase in the number of infections in southern Germany, together with the end of the autumn break, presented laboratories in Bavaria, among others, with particular challenges.”

The association spoke of another drastic increase in the number of infections. The rate of positive results has increased further to 17.3 percent (previous week: 16.2 percent). In Saxony, more than every third test carried out is positive (37 percent). According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), low rates mean that testing is very sensitive and that people with mild symptoms are also recorded. The higher the rate, the higher the number of unreported infections presumably. (dpa)
