Rome – Two high Vatican employees and close confidants of Pope Francis have tested positive for the corona virus. Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and his deputy, Archbishop Edgar Pena Parra, have isolated themselves in their apartments, the press office of the Holy See announced on Tuesday. The Cardinal Secretary of State is the Vatican’s most important diplomat and is therefore considered number two in the Papal States after the Pope.
The Italian Parolin (67) has very mild symptoms, the Venezuelan Pena Parra (61) has no symptoms. Both clergymen were fully vaccinated with three doses, it said. The Vatican recently issued strict Covid rules: only vaccinated or recovered employees are allowed to enter their workplace in the Papal States. (dpa)
