Although the first settlers arrived on the island in 1493, it was not until 28 years later that the first governor, Juan Ponce de León, gave the capital its current settlement. Don Felipe’s visit for this 5th centenary -who is accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Kings Maroto, and the Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, Angels Moreno Bau– does nothing other than highlight the very special bond that exists between Spain and Puerto Rico, ties that have intensified in recent years from the political, economic and cultural point of view.

In addition, the King will visit the exhibitions on Juan Ramon Jimenez and the legacy of Pau Casals, Besides of San Juan Museum and the Church of Saint Joseph.

Since 1996

The inauguration of the president of Honduras will be the 74th to which Don Felipe will attend and the seventh -after Mexico (2018), Panama (2019), Uruguay (2020), Bolivia (2020), Ecuador (2021) and Peru (2021)- since he is Head of State.

It was in 1996 when Juan Carlos I entrusted to his son the task of representing the Corona in the investiture ceremonies of Ibero-American presidents. When Don Felipe was proclaimed King in 2014, Don Juan Carlos began to exercise this function, which after his retirement from public life Felipe VI again assumed.

All these trips mean that Don Felipe has very close relations with the vast majority of Ibero-American leaders, who especially value the King’s attendance at inaugurations.
