A temporary fence already separates Poland from Belarus. Holes are now being drilled for permanent foundations.

Warsaw – Poland wants to start building a permanent fortification on the EU’s external border with Belarus tomorrow. “The work starts with drilling holes for the piles and setting them in concrete,” the spokeswoman for the border guards told the PAP news agency on Monday.

For months, thousands of migrants have been trying to get from Belarus to Poland or the Baltic States via the EU’s external borders. The EU accuses the Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko of having flown people from crisis areas such as Iraq or Afghanistan to Minsk in order to then smuggle them into the EU.

Poland’s border with Belarus is 418 kilometers long, of which 186 kilometers are overland. At the end of August, soldiers had already erected a temporary fence on these stretches of land to make it difficult for migrants to cross the border. This is a barbed wire enclosure about 2.50 meters high. This is now to be replaced by a permanent barrier 5.5 meters high, equipped with motion detectors and cameras. A budget of the equivalent of 366 million euros has been earmarked for the project. dpa
