Ukraine has dismissed Russian warnings of a possible military offensive by Kiev against breakaway territories in the east of the country as unfounded.

Kiev – “Ukraine is not planning any offensive actions in the Donbass and is not assembling troops there either,” Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told journalists on Monday. In the event of an offensive by the Ukrainian side, Moscow is again threatening an invasion because many Russian citizens also live in the Donbass.

Kiev and the Ukrainians did not want war, Kuleba said. At the same time, the 40-year-old emphasized the importance of foreign arms deliveries. “The dozens of tons of defense weapons, equipment and ammunition arriving in Ukraine today are tons of new arguments that strengthen Ukraine’s negotiating position.” The German refusal to deliver arms to Kiev has been heavily criticized, especially in Ukraine.

For weeks, there have been warnings, especially in the West, of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has reportedly massed more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border. Kiev has been at war with its neighbors since Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in 2014. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his US colleague Antony Blinken want to talk on the phone on Tuesday about the current crisis situation, the Foreign Ministry announced in Moscow. (dpa)
