Macron and Putin consider meeting in Ukraine crisis

As the Elysee Palace announced on Monday, Macron recently had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The possibility of a direct meeting was also discussed, it said. The US and Russia had previously exchanged blows in the UN Security Council, while Great Britain threatened new sanctions against Russia.

Macron said that he and Putin agreed to continue the dialogue on the implementation of the Minsk agreement with Ukraine. The two presidents also welcomed the “progress” in the Normandy format talks (Ukraine, Russia, Germany, France). According to the Kremlin, the security guarantees requested from Russia were also discussed. It was the second phone call between the two presidents in three days.
