Amnesty accuses Israel of apartheid

IAccording to Amnesty International (AI), srael has created a system of oppression and domination over the Palestinians that conforms to international definitions of apartheid. The human rights organization sets out its arguments in a detailed report that was published on Tuesday. AI is thus joining other human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch or B’Tselem, which have made this assessment before.

Strategies of fragmentation, segregation, control, dispossession, and disenfranchisement served one purpose, the report says: to ensure Jewish-Israeli supremacy. “This is tantamount to apartheid, which is prohibited under international law.” Amnesty refers to definitions of the Anti-Apartheid Convention and the International Criminal Court. The latter speaks of apartheid when human rights violations are committed in the “context of an institutionalized system of systematic oppression and control by one ethnic group over one or more other ethnic groups in order to maintain that regime”. In the case of Israel, the Palestinians are the ones who suffer, writes Amnesty; both those in the occupied territories and those in Israel and even those living as refugees in other countries. The organization called on the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions on individual Israeli officials and an arms embargo on the country.

The Israeli government had called the report “false, biased and anti-Semitic” before it was published. Jewish organizations, including in Germany, also criticized the assessment as anti-Semitic.
