The use of the digital EU Covid certificates is to be extended by one year due to the ongoing pandemic.

Brussels – The use of digital EU Covid certificates is to be extended by one year due to the ongoing pandemic. As the EU Commission proposed on Thursday, the legal basis for proof of recent corona tests, vaccinations or recoveries should apply until June 30, 2023. The EU countries still have to agree to the proposal.

The digital certificates are intended to make traveling in the EU, which is sometimes complicated by Corona, easier. They can be stored on a smartphone. Using a QR code, it can be proven across Europe and beyond whether you have been vaccinated against Corona, have recently recovered from an infection or have just been tested for the virus. The rules have been in effect since June 30, 2021. They would actually expire on June 30 of this year. According to the EU Commission, the extension is necessary due to the pandemic situation.

In addition, the EU Commission is also proposing changes. In the future, it should be ensured that proof of booster vaccinations can be clearly presented and that certificates can be issued for people who take part in clinical tests for vaccines. (dpa)
