A little over two months before the Catalan elections on February 14, the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, has chosen Barcelona to pay tribute to a Constitution, which, in his opinion, is in greater danger than ever with a government “supported” by the “coup plotters” and “by the ETA”. In his list of supposed protectors of the Socialist Executive, he has included “big media” and even some “Ibex companies.” A government, about which Abascal has once again suggested that it is worse than those of the Franco dictatorship. He has reasoned it like this: if for the EH Bildu spokesman, Arnaldo Otegi, the current one is the best government in 80 years, “For millions of Spaniards it can only be the worst government in eighty years”.
Escorted by the Vox candidate to the regional elections, Ignacio Garriga, more than a tribute to the Magna Carta, Abascal has tried to turn the act into a signal of “alert” before the Executive “illegitimate and liar” of Pedro Sánchez, which, according to him, takes advantage of the pandemic to “accelerate the attack” on the Constitution. In his opinion, for the first time since 1978 the day of the Constitution is celebrated “with ETA and the separatist coup in the direction of the State.” In short, a speech whose main objective was Pedro Sánchez. For the leader of Vox, «the greatest enemy» of the Magna Carta is the socialist government «supported» in “Totalitarian communism”, the “Coup separatism” Y “ETA”.
This string of epithets was launched by Abascal this Sunday in a brief ceremony held before some 300 supporters in the Plaza de Sant Jaume in the Catalan capital, where both the Palau de la Generalitat and the Barcelona City Council are located. There, in a square shielded by the riot police of the Mossos d’Esquadra (Brimo) to prevent the entry of some 150 self-described anti-fascists who were demonstrating against the presence of Vox, Abascal has also warned his faithful Catalans not to trust “the coup” that the independence movement sought in October 2017 “still alive.”
In almost identical terms that Abascal had pronounced shortly before the Vox candidate for the Presidency of the Generalitat, Ignacio Garriga, for whom the Constitution and the Monarchy are “in serious threat” by «A social communist government and by the ETA party». For this reason, in electoral terms, he has called for “Do not take a step back” and “recover Catalonia”.
