He was educated at the cathedral school of San Martín de Tours. After having been in the courts of the Count of Anjou and the Duke of Aquitaine, at the age of 19 he received the tonsure of Tours and did his studies in Paris, to return to Tours as canon. He was ordained a priest and sent as an abbot to the monastery of Cluny. He directed several monasteries by order of Pope John XI.
