The Spanish Collegiate Medical Organization (OMC) has advised receiving the second dose of the coronavirus vaccine developed by the company AstraZeneca “where appropriate” and regardless of age.
The AstraZeneca vaccine prescribing information indicates, as the agency recalls, that se administered to adults 18 years of age and older, without age limitations. In addition, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has said that cases of cerebral venous sinus or splanchnic vein thrombosis should be considered extraordinarily rare adverse effects, with 169 cases observed in 34 million doses administered.
“Its indications are not modified, since it is an effective and very safe vaccine for the prevention of Covid-19, especially hospitalizations and deaths,” they have said from the WTO to highlight that the World Health Organization ( WHO) has also recognized that, after the administration of more than 200 million doses, the benefit of the vaccine is “incomparably greater” than its rare potential adverse effects and recalls that, although they are plausible, currently “its causal relationship is not proven ».
“We believe that citizens should address, with complete peace of mind, to receive their dose at the authorized vaccination centers when they are summoned and that, if they have already received the first dose of AstraZeneca, the second dose should be administered when appropriate, regardless of age. Faced with a pandemic that has had a brutal impact on our lives, it is necessary to use this vaccine, like the others, to deal with SARS-CoV-2 “, said the doctors.
Also, on the introduction of new vaccines, the WTO has stressed the importance of explaining “clearly” that, if the current speed of supply is not interrupted, the autonomous communities will expand coverage «enormously» vaccinated in the coming weeks, being “unnecessary” another incorporation.
A new organic law
The rest of the world, outside of Europe, requires many doses to continue advancing in immunization and it is “improper” for rich countries to monopolize all production. “It goes without saying that the process of inclusion of any new drug must be coordinated at the national level and must respect the EMA guidelines, avoiding inequalities between regions and autonomies,” added the agency.
Finally, and regarding the end of the state of alarm, doctors have highlighted the need to agree on a new organic law, or admit that another state of alarm will have to be decided in Parliament if the epidemiological circumstances so require.
