In view of the situation on the EU’s external border with Belarus, the CSU European politician Manfred Weber has called for the European Union to take a decisive stance.
Berlin – “The European message has to be: It’s enough!” Said the leader of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament of the newspaper “Bild” (Tuesday). He spoke out in favor of “tightened sanctions” against the Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko and those around him. The EU accuses Lukashenko of flying in migrants in an organized manner from crisis areas in order to then smuggle them into the EU. In response to EU sanctions, he had declared that he no longer wanted to stop people on their way to the EU. The EU reaction to Lukashenko’s actions must be “closed and determined”, Weber demanded. “The eastern EU states need quick and efficient help.”
The situation on the Polish-Belarusian border had recently come to a head. According to the Polish authorities, larger groups of migrants tried to break through the border from the Belarusian side on Monday. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also called for additional sanctions against Belarus in the evening. The EU is working in particular to sanction third country airlines that are involved in the transport of migrants to Belarus, said von der Leyen.
Weber was critical of Turkey – one of the countries from which migrants flew to Belarus. “If the Turkish President (Recep Tayyip) Erdogan now attempts to blackmail the EU by means of numerous migrant flights from Turkey to Belarus, an unequivocal answer is needed,” Weber said. “He will fail as much as he did with his attempt to smuggle migrants across the Greek-Turkish border. The commission must immediately start talks with the Turkish government. ” (dpa)
