The new school year begins and the defenders of linguistic immersion return to the charge to ensure that the autonomous language not be used not only in the classroom. The linguistic model in force in schools and institutes in Catalonia shields Catalan as its own language while the presence of Spanish is “residual”, as recognized by the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) in its order of December 2021, which requires that at least 25 percent of the classes be in Spanish in all centers. Now, the advocates of immersion want the use of Catalan to go beyond the classroom barrier and for students to use it as well so
majority to interact in the fields of social interaction.
Under the motto of “No t’excusis” (“Do not excuse yourself”), Platform for the Language, the Catalan NGO controversially conducting studies of incognito language uses in school yards – the last one, as reported by ABC in its edition of June 11, 2021, focused on three public institutes in the town of Valls (Tarragona) -, has promoted an offensive in the networks with the aim of reinforcing the social use of the autonomous language among students.
In some centers such as Jaume Huguet Institute de Valls (in the image) this morning the students came across a large banner at the entrance to the school campus that read: «In the courtyards of the public institutes of Valls only 40 percent of the conversations are in Catalan . Are you sure we have a school in Catalan?».
At the bottom of the canvas appeared the reference of the web page where you can support the aforementioned campaign (www.notexcusis.cat), which has the seal of the Plataforma per la Llengua -when you register it tells you that your data is will manage the entity- and has been promoted on its Twitter account by the Union of Students of the Catalan Countries (Sepc).
«Almost forty years after the linguistic immersion model began to be applied in Catalan public schools, children and young people in Catalonia are increasingly interacting in Spanish, both inside and outside the educational centers: the corridors, the courtyard, the street, the internet … », indicates the campaign in the introductory text
He adds that “although immersion has been able to guarantee a basic knowledge of Catalan, it has not succeeded in getting the language through the classroom door in a generalized way.” Faced with this situation, the promoters ask “Awareness, commitment and action” and they urge participation. “The future of Catalan needs you!”
The Assembly for a Bilingual School (AEB) has denounced on the networks this new offensive by the defenders of immersion in Catalan. «We will not allow you to harass the students in the courtyard so that they speak Catalan. We will report any campaign that attempts to pressure students. Leave the children alone!», Denounces the entity.
