The radical Catalan independence movement continues without forgiving Josep Lluís Trapero, mayor of the Mossos d’Esquadra, who during the months of September and October 2017, the moment of greatest tension of the ‘procés’, played two-way, in the best of cases, and then defended before the Supreme Court that it had a plan drawn up – never seen before – to arrest the then president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, in case the Justice ordered it.
Now, minority but noisy sectors, especially on the internet social networks, encouraged by the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) want to take advantage of a change in the structure of the Ministry of the Interior that affects the bodyguard service created by Quim Torra, the called ‘praetorian guard’, for the Government to purge Trapero and remove him from the direction of the autonomous police force, as well as various bodyguards accused of being supporters of Ciudadanos and Vox.
Five pro-independence groups linked to the Mossos d’Esquadra (Adic Departament d’Interior, Guilleries Mossos, Mossos per Democràcia, Mossos per la República Catalana and SindicatSAME) signed a statement on August 3 asking Pere Aragonès (ERC), president of the Generalitat, which was also criticized, for withdrawing confidence in Trapero “for having stated that would again oppose a referendum mostly loved by Catalan citizens ”and for having said that he believes in Spanish Justice.
And they also recalled that, at the time, Trapero “designed a plan to stop a whole democratically chosen government”, in reference to what was defended by the largest of the Mossos d’Esquadra during the judgment in the Supreme, first, and then before the National Court, which ended up absolving him of any criminal responsibility for the ‘procés’.
New escort areas
These groups criticized the disappearance of the Institutional Security Area (ASI), the «praetorian guard» created by Torra in 2019 to escort the president of the Generalitat and whose leadership withdrew from Trapero and the Prefecture of the Mossos d’Esquadra, against of the opinion of the major; and they asked Aragonès to, In addition to purging Trapero, more powers are withdrawn from the Prefecture –Which is governed by technical issues– and come under political control.
In fact, the remodeling of the Ministry of the Interior maintains that political dependency for the Security Area of the Presidency of the Generalitat (ASPG), which replaces the ASI, and which will be in the hands of the General Directorate of the Police, whose responsible it is Pere Ferrer, who in turn worked with the directors Jordi Jané (CiU), Quim Forn (Junts) and Miquel Buch (Junts), and that Joan Ignasi Elena (ERC), current Minister of the Interior, ratified him in the position.
This department of presidential escorts will be in charge of the surveillance of Aragonès, as well as of their private home, certain buildings of the Generalitat and the security of the former regional presidents who want it. In this sense, these radical independence groups criticized that the escort service is not offered to Puigdemont, which does not have the approval of the Ministry of the Interior since he is on the run from Justice.
The reform also affects the bodyguards of the rest of the authorities, who will be grouped in the Authorities Security Area (ASA), and that it won’t depend on Trapero either since the direction will be in the hands of Ferrer.
