Platoon today became the winner of the Menorca 52 Super Series Sailing Week. The owner Harm Müller-Spreer’s boat did so without having to compromise his leadership as it was not possible to start due to the lack of wind. He was accompanied on the podium at the Club Marítimo de Mahón by the Alegre by Andrés Soriano and the Quantum by Doug DeVos.
For Platoon this is the fourth win in a 52 Super Series regatta after those he achieved in 2017 in Scarlino and in 2019 here in Menorca and in Puerto Portals. The last two times that the regatta has landed on the island, the triumph has gone to the German boat in which the Spaniards Víctor Mariño, Javier de la Plaza and the Mallorcan Jordi Calafat are. With this triumph, Müller-Spreer tied with Ran as the third team that has won the most events in the competition, only surpassed by Quantum and Azzurra.
Today it was not possible to haggle due to the instability of a weak wind that began from the north and rolled to the east without there being any margin to be able to give a departure to the fleet. Finally, María Torrijo, head of the Race Committee, sent the fleet ashore at 2.30 pm, ending the competition.
As regards the general classification of the 52 Super Series 2021 circuit, equality is maximum among the first four classified. Platoon and Quantum Racing are tied for the lead with 46 points, but only one of them is found by Alegre himself and Takashi Okura’s Sled. Thus the swords are at the top for the final test of the most Balearic season that will be played from the Real Club Náutico de Palma de Mallorca from November 2 to 6, which will also coincide with the Rolex TP52 World Championship.
Platoon consolidated his victory on Thursday when with a fourth and a first he was able to get ahead of Alegre who was the leader until that day. The Germans have won for consistency and have once again made the same records as the previous winners in the Mahón regattas. Alegre made three firsts, but punctured on Thursday. Platoon has averaged 3.6 points per sleeve, which is always a winner in these waters. The most important thing has been not to fail since his worst result has been a sixth place.
And again in Mahón the maxim has been given that the one who wins the most sleeves never triumphs in the competition. And that is precisely what happened to Andrés Soriano’s Alegre, who after winning the first three rounds was harmed by his irregular day on Thursday. Soriano was on the verge of getting his first victory on the circuit as he missed him by just two points. However, his good season will allow him to fight for the final victory of the season in Mallorca in four weeks.
Also Quantum will be one of the contenders to the final triumph of the season. It is the only team that has repeated the podium this season since in Puerto Portals it was second and here in Menorca it finished third. Those of DeVos have recovered from their bad starts in the first three sets and that fighting spirit has made them be in the ointment for the victory of the season.
Harm Müller-Spreer, rod and owner of the Platoon, maintains: “It is strange to have won here for the second time because we were not sure, but it is very nice to do it again like in 2019. It has been a very complicated competition, with very different days of conditions and many wind roles. We are all very even and the smallest mistake is very expensive. It is a victory for the whole team because we have all done a good job. In Portals we had three penalties and that hurt us, but we are in the game with other teams that we are going to fight for the final victory of the season. We will compete for our third World Cup in Palma, but that will not be easy at all. Anything can happen ”.
