The Popular Party has thrown the rest this Sunday in the Plaza de Toros de Valencia, in a day in which it has exhibited the mobilization capacity of its affiliates and supporters and in which it has remembered with nostalgia the days of wine and roses, at the same time that it has launched a message of unity around its leader.
The closing to a week of traveling National Convention has become a show of force in which the party has once again stepped on the arena of great victories and has evoked – six years after his last visit to the arena – the spirit that led José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy to Moncloa, Eduardo Zaplana to the Generalitat and Francisco Camps, and Rita Barberá from the Valencia City Council.
Today, far from that last act of the 2015 electoral campaign -after which the PP lost the regional and local government- and in which the party lived low hours, surrounded by cases of corruption, the popular have recovered a scenario that for decades it was a symbol of its hegemony in the Valencian Community.
Since early in the morning, a river of people – mouths in hand – has been descending from the hundreds of buses who have arrived in the capital of Turia, the majority from municipalities in the province but also from the rest of the Region and from other parts of Spain. Upon arrival at the Plaza de Toros, the New Generations volunteers received them with the complete pack: water bottle, bracelet, flag and hat, which will have been good for more than one to protect themselves from the intense sun that has shone this Sunday in the city.
As is usual in the big events of the PP, DJ Octopus has contributed to lift the spirits of the attendees and promote a festive atmosphere: in the arena they have sounded from ‘Pepas’ to ‘Danza Kuduro’, with some pasodoble in between.
The announcement of the arrival of the Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has caused a furor, but it was the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, who dared to take the microphone to greet the about 9,500 peopleAccording to the organization, they filled the bullring, not counting those who have stayed at the door due to capacity restrictions.
“We come because what they are doing to us is fine, we want elections now,” commented a group of women from the capital. «And then we are going to eat a paella», they have sentenced while waiting for the arrival of the party president, Pablo Casado, received with fervor with his wife, Isabel Torres, to get a photo with him.
Before making his particular return to the ring and flying a Senyera, Casado has improvised a rally outside to address the hundreds of people who have remained outside the Plaza de Toros. «I have been many times like you», has assured flanked by María José Catalá, Carlos Mazón, Vicente Mompó and Teodoro García Egea, who have also thanked the public for their support.
Already in matter, and among the speeches against the «sanchismo», the ‘cheers’ to the King, the cries of “freedom” and “yes you can” or allusions to the legacy of Rita Barberá, from the stands a “Long live the mother who gave birth to you!” when Carlos Mazón intervened. The president of the PP in the Valencian Community has picked up the glove and has responded by pointing with laughter to one of the sides of the square: “It’s there.”
The group of regional barons and national leaders has been joined by the involuntary role of the former president of the Generalitat, Francisco Camps, in his first party act after showing his willingness to run for mayor of Valencia months ago despite the fact that the PP had already appointed María José Catalá as a candidate for 2023.
At the stroke of two in the afternoon, once the party was over and suffocated by the heat, the public has vacated the venue. Some have started the return trip with several hours of road ahead. Others, even before the organization began to dismantle the entire infrastructure, would already be sitting at a table to continue with the Valencian liturgy on Sunday.
