MADRID, 22 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Supreme Court of Brazil has transferred to the Prosecutor’s Office an accusation against the country’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, for spreading and defending the use of chloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, to treat coronavirus patients, despite the fact that they do not exist scientific studies that support its use.
The accusation has been presented by the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), which considers that Bolsonaro would have put the lives of coronavirus patients at risk by encouraging the use of a drug that not only does not have scientific endorsement for these cases, but also It has also been shown to be harmful to people with heart and respiratory problems.
In turn, the PDT has denounced the use of public funds for the purchase of chloroquine through the Unified Health System (SUS), since it has not had the authorization for this purpose from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) , something for which the Bolsonaro government has already been questioned by the Federal Court of Accounts of Brazil (TCU).
“There was an excessive diffusion of chloroquine, with probable illegalities in the spending of public money when there is not even a scientific study that demonstrates the effectiveness of the drug in combating and preventing the new coronavirus,” the PDT denounced.
“By prescribing a drug without a scientific prescription, Mr. Jair Bolsonaro endangered the lives of Brazilians who ingested a drug that was contraindicated in various medical conditions,” the complaint remarks.
With this movement of the Supreme Court, the complaint goes to the table of the attorney general, Ausgusto Aras, a traditional ally of the president, who has been pressured in recent weeks to advance some of the complaints against the president that are piled up in the office.
It will be Aras who must decide now, he is the only one with the power to do so, whether to file a criminal complaint against Bolsonaro, or for a common crime. Among the other options you have, is to request a preliminary investigation into the case from the Supreme Court, or to attach other related investigations to it.
It is estimated that the Ministry of Health has spent one million reais (more than 150,000 euros) since the beginning of the pandemic on this drug, which, unlike coronavirus vaccines, has had the favor of President Bolsonaro, a who is frequent to see in their interventions flaunt the supposed benefits that its use brings.
The use of chloroquine to treat COVID-19 has become a matter of State in Brazil, after Bolsonaro has been so in favor – he himself is taking it after testing positive – than his previous ministers of Health , Luiz Henrique Mandetta and Nelson Teich, chose to leave the position due to the great differences about the convenience of administering this drug.
In total, nine investigations have already been opened against Bolsonaro, the last for the possible omission of his functions in the health crises in Amazonas and Pará, facts for which the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, is also being investigated and that could suppose their expulsion from office.
Last week the Prosecutor’s Office announced that it is evaluating the possibility of presenting an accusation against Bolsonaro for a possible crime when in June of last year he encouraged his followers to break into public hospitals and check if the health collapse that the local authorities had denounced was sure.
Bolsonaro has also been denounced for not complying with the measures imposed by local governments, such as the use of the mask and avoiding crowds, in addition to dealing with other people without protection when he confirmed his positive for coronavirus.
