The tablets arrived at a bad time. They never really found their place between mobile phones and computers. But perhaps they were not going to be substitutes but, rather, side products. And so it has been. They are fantastic equipment to consume multimedia content, although over time they were filled with increasingly advanced features. An example of equilibrium is the iPad Air, new model of the American multinational, which by qualities can cannibalize its brother the iPad Pro.
This is the fourth version of this family that now makes much more sense. It sits somewhere between the most basic iPad and the top model, with which it is even closer. It stands out for its new, sober design with square edges that gives it an elegant and robust aesthetic. Very high end. All its “guts” have been completely renewed, with an A14 Bionic chip of own manufacture. It is very powerful. It is the same as the one mounted on the iPhone 12 but it is the demonstration that is perfectly aligned to achieve a solvent and fluid performance, which is also pushed by 4 GB of RAM.
The equipment is light and lightweight, only 6.1 millimeters thick. Just for comparison, the “normal” iPad is 7.5mm and the iPad Pro 5.9mm. It has a screen of 10.9 inches with few edges, so a very large touch panel is available to view and create content. Well built, reminiscent of the iPad Pro but smaller. A perfect size for everyone.
Altogether it has a modern look. The screen is laminated, which gives a feeling of good quality and resistance. You can tell when you press a little on the screen with your finger or the Pencil. But that has a less kind side: it is more difficult to lift with one hand from a flat surface and it only offers a 60 Hz refresh rate, although the differences at higher frequencies are only negligible. Like the brightness level, somewhat below expectations.
It has a USB-C charging connector instead of the classic Lightning, so you have to use compatible accessories such as the second generation Apple Pencil stylus (it is charged by a magnetic system on one side). This connector is healthy for adding other accessories and external equipment. Also on one side, specifically on the off button, where a sensor that recognizes fingerprint. It is fast and comfortable. And against all odds, it has the Face ID facial recognition system that continues to live up to the demands. It is a method of unlocking and authorizing mobile payments.
The camera has also been renewed although keeping a single lens in the rear 12 megapixels instead of two like on the iPad Pro. But it is perhaps a more secondary question because it is not a product that users are going to use to portray landscapes. But at least HDR technology has been incorporated to enhance some aspects of the captured images.
This model is also compatible with accessories such as the Magic Keyboard, a keyboard designed for iPad that has its own “trackpad” or touch panel that makes a pointer appear simulating a user interface of a computer operating system. It is an essential purchase, although the downside is that it is marketed independently (of the brand). Together with the stylus, you can power the tablet to become a creative tool. Most questionable aspect is its autonomy. It is a section that needs improvement because it does not exceed nine hours.
