They begin an investigation to determine the antiviral benefits of saffron in patients with Covid-19




The Government of La Rioja, through the Center for Biomedical Research of La Rioja (CIBIR), will develop a pioneering study to know the therapeutic effects of saffron in patients with acute infection by Covid-19. To proceed with its implementation, 30 patients who require hospital admission to San Pedro de Logroño as a consequence of said disease will be selected.

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is one of the culinary herbs that has numerous uses as a preservative, coloring, food ingredient, pharmaceutical and as a traditional medicine in some countries. Studies have confirmed that saffron has therapeutic properties that could be assimilated to some of the symptoms that the Covid-19 infected patients, which is why we want to carry out this study.

For this, the company ‘Castillo de Aguas Mansas’ from Agoncillo, La Rioja, provides the base product, organic saffron, to proceed to the study carried out from one of the CIBIR research groups, composed of the main researcher Mª Jesús Chinchetru Ranedo (Endocrinologist, Endocrinology Service of the San Pedro Hospital), Carolina Crespo De Mata (Nutritionist of the Endocrinology Service of the San Pedro Hospital). Pedro) and Ruth López de Dicastillo Roldán (Food Service Bromatologist at Hospital San Pedro), with the collaboration of the Pharmacy department of the Riojano Health Service and of the personnel of the infectious plant of the Hospital San Pedro.

Thus, Ruth López de Dicastillo explained that «The objective of the study is to evaluate the impact of the administration of saffron on the prognosis and sequelae of patients hospitalized for an acute infection by Covid-19 ”and that, initially,“ the bases of the study were raised by creating needs and expectations, and requesting the collaboration of both the SERIS pharmacy department for the preparation of the capsules (presentation format) as from HSP infectious plant staff»To later, once the practical part of the study has been carried out, proceed to draw conclusions.

The study will be developed in thirty patients and saffron will be administered to fifteen of them after encapsulation of the product by the pharmacy service that has already been performed.
