Only 11.25 percent of the towns in the Valencian Community -62 of the 542 municipalities- have not yet reported any positive case due to coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, which leaves them as the only “clean” stronghold of viruses in the Valencian territory.
The x-ray of these peoples free of Covid-19 draws municipalities with an average population that does not reach 200 inhabitants, with records of between ten and just 500 residents – 0.2 percent of the total population of the Valencian Community – and normally located within the territory, in especially attractive enclaves.

Without shops or services, many of them, with hardly any leisure, with visits from doctors once a week and hardly a bar -the ones that have it-, the neighbors, largely older, live confined in their own municipalities and if they go out They always do it armed with a mask and keep a safe distance.
In numbers, according to statistics from the Generalitat Updated to December 5, there are 28 municipalities in the province of Castellón, 20.74 percent of its 135 towns; 19 of Alicante, 13.47 percent of its 141 towns, and only 5.26 percent of the towns of Valencia, 14 of the 266. In population they do not reach 10,700 residents (0.2 percent of the inhabitants of the Valencian Community).
They are cases like those of Goat Castle, in Baix Maestrat (Castellón), where ten people live; Always, municipality of the Valencian region of La Vall d’Albaida with 28 registered but only fifteen living there, and Famorca, in El Comtat (Alicante), with 47 neighbors.

On the contrary, the “clean” towns of around 500 inhabitants are Gallinera Valley, with 589, and Benigembla (444), both in the Alicante region of Marina Alta, and Guardamar de la Safor, a Valencian municipality, one of the few coastal areas without Covid-19, located in the region of La Safor and with 491 registered residents, or Gàtova (Valencia, 412).
If two months ago there were 115 towns in the Valencian Community that had not yet registered any positive case for coronavirus, as of December 5, the figure has practically halved, now there are 61.
By the end of October they had been reduced to a hundred; by mid-November they were already below eighty and just a few days ago they were not reaching seventy, according to the same statistics.

This reduction in the number of towns “saved” contrasts with the incidence rate accumulated over fourteen days in the Valencian Community: if on October 8 – just before the bridge of October 9 and 12 that triggered the second hello in this region- it was barely 104.32 per 100,000 inhabitants (only above the Canary Islands), last Friday it reached 232.64, although this Monday it has decreased to 210.14.
The “luck” of municipalities without coronavirus
The mayor of Goat Castle, the town with the fewest inhabitants in the Valencian Community, Maria Jose Tena, attributes to “luck” that his small municipality is still free because the ten residents who inhabit it have to travel to buy or work in Morella, Benicarló or Vinaròs, towns with contagions.
«You never know where the Covid-19. People go to buy or work in Morella, Vinaròs or Benicarló and there is luck because there are positives there, ”he points out to EFE, and acknowledges that visitors barely reach the urban center and opt for hiking or cycling in the surroundings , and in the only bar in town there are hardly any crowds and security measures are followed.
In the Valencian municipality of Always a similar situation occurs, as its mayor tells EFE, Maria Dolores Ortolá, since the only fifteen neighbors who live there go out to buy in larger towns and with infections such as Xàtiva or Benigànim.
«It is luck and also careful because they put on their markings, take the car, come and go. They are older people, they have no contacts and their families are careful when they visit them, ”he explains; The doctor goes once a week and they bring them bread daily, but they hardly have visitors in the town, although they do in the surroundings.
Vicente Ruiz is the mayor of Famorca, and he also believes that staying free of coronavirus is a matter of “luck and awareness” because eighty percent of the 47 residents of the municipality are elderly people who barely go out to do the shopping – they usually walk around town – and wear a mask and avoid contacts.
The fear of contagion in this case comes from the tourist attraction of the mountain in which it is located, which “has brought many people during the bridge and on weekends,” says Ruiz, who acknowledges that the town’s bar is a meeting point but that young people with housing do not go to Famorca for fear of infecting their older neighbors.
In Gátova There are more than 400 inhabitants and it has all the services, but according to its mayor, EFE Manolo Martinez, its inhabitants are “quite aware” and when they go to work or buy “they keep their distances and hygiene measures”, but recognize that being a mountain tourist town “worries” that the virus comes from outside.
“The main concern are cyclists and walkers. We are in the heart of Sierra Calderona and although that puts us at a distance, there is also a lot of flow on weekends “, he points out and maintains:” You have to have a point of luck but we try to arrive as late as possible; if it is when there is a vaccine, the better, because it will arrive.
The mayor of Guardamar de la Safor, Ana Isabel Ferrer, explains to EFE that in his town, one of the few coastal areas free of coronavirusThere are 300 registered but about 500 live and as a dormitory city, people rarely go out on the street and are “quite aware”.
“There is a bit of luck and it has not touched us because the children go to school in Gandia or Daimús, who do have infections”, while in the only bar in town, in the gym or the music school – the library is closed – hygiene and distance measures are taken and aerated. Even in the small town hall they telecommute in shifts and an appointment is required.
