From northeast to southwest. Here’s how expanding the line 11 of Metro, which until now served the residents of the Carabanchel district, will cross the entire capital, joining the future station of North Valdebebas with Four Winds. The so-called “great diagonal” will become an ambitious project that promises to improve mobility thanks to its 21 stations, including Atocha and the airport, and its connection with seven of the main interchanges in the region and with eleven of the twelve suburban lines.

The works of the new great axis, which was presented yesterday by the vice president of the regional government, Ignacio Aguado, and the Minister of Transport, Angel Garrido, they plan to start up in 2022 and end in 2026. The engineering work will be carried out along 33.5 kilometers underground distributed in three sections: the first, north section, will have an estimated length of 7.2 kilometers and will link Mar de Cristal with Valdebebas, making intermediate stops at the future station of the City of Justice, which will act as an interchange with the new Valdebebas Cercanías station, Terminal 4 of the airport and the new station north of Valdebebas. “This guarantees the arrival of Metro to new developments in the northeast of Madrid, where key infrastructures such as the new Hospital Isabel Zendal, the Campus of Justice, the expansion of Ifema and the airport. It also replaces the initial project of a branch from line 8 “, they say from the Executive.

The second, called central and 8 kilometers long, will go from Count of Casal to Mar de Cristal, facilitating the transfer to suburban lines 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 and stopping at Vinateros, La Elipa, Pueblo Nuevo and Arturo Soria. It is not ruled out that they are linked to possible new intermediate stops.

Finally, the southern section, with 18.3 kilometers of tracks, will extend its current end in The Fortune to Cuatro Vientos and from there you will reach Conde de Casal, guaranteeing the connection with Metro lines 1, 3, 6 and 10 and also making a stop at Elliptical Square and at the main Renfe station in the Community, Athocha Gate. This section includes two new stations already planned: Comillas and Madrid Río, in addition to the new interchange in Conde de Casal that will serve the entire A-3 corridor.

The works, on the other hand, will be developed in phases, although there are still fringes to be specified, such as the duration of each one. What is known is that the first, according to sources in the Area, will affect the segment that connects Plaza Elíptica with Conde de Casal, an expansion already planned.

The extension is expected to multiply by more than ten the trips that this line makes daily. Its other function will be to decongest lines 6 and 10, by generating new routes, as well as promoting “intermodality”, by connecting seven of the main interchanges that the city will have: Cuatro Vientos, Plaza Elíptica, Atocha, Conde de Casal, Crystal Sea, Valdebebas-City of Justice and Airport T4.

“This will be the line with the greatest potential in the entire Metro network”, assured the counselor Ángel Garrido. «Its transversal configuration makes it the most attractive and responds to the needs of Madrid residents, reducing travel time, minimizing transfers, decongesting other lines and, ultimately, promoting public transport, “he said.

The extension, with a planned investment of more than 1,600 million euros, it will be presented to the European Union Recovery and Resilience Fund for funding. The Ministry of Transport expects to receive about 5,000 million euros that it will invest in 117 projects aimed at the ecological transition and territorial mobility. Among them will be the extensions planned for line 3, which will connect Villaverde with Metrosur through the El Casar station, and line 5, from Alameda de Osuna to the airport.
